The Fuquay-Varina Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.
The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying.




Performing Artists/Presenters
Touring Theatre of North Carolina and Broach Theatre, Greensboro
The Touring Theatre of North Carolina and the Broach Theatre are holding general auditions for the 2009–2010 season. Auditions will be held at the Congregational United Church of Christ at 400 W. Radiance Dr., Greensboro, by appointment only.
Deadline: Auditions held September 14 beginning at 6 p.m. by appointment only.

Arts Presenters/MetLife Arts Access Awards, Washington, D.C.
The Association of Performing Arts Presenters is accepting applications for two 2010 Arts Presenters/MetLife Arts Access Awards. "Engaging Individuals with Disabilities" will award $10,000 each to two organizations working to help individuals with disabilities experience and value the performing arts. "Engaging Underserved Communities" will award $10,000 each to two organizations that have been exemplary and innovative in their dedication and approach to engaging underserved individuals and communities that lack access to the performing arts and cultural life in the community.

Literary Artists
Cabell First Novelist Award, Virginia Commonwealth University
A prize of $5,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to give a reading in Richmond, Va., is given annually to honor a first novel published in the current year.
Deadline: September 15 for books published January–June 2009 and January 15 for books published July–December 2009.

Bakeless Literary Publication Prizes
The Bread Loaf Writers' Conference of Middlebury College in Vermont sponsors the Bakeless Literary Publication Prizes, an annual book series competition for new authors of literary works in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. Winners of the Bakeless Prizes will have their book-length manuscripts published by Graywolf Press. In addition to the publication prize, each winner will be awarded a fellowship to attend the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference.

Visual Artists
Durham Art Guild
The Durham Art Guild (DAG) is now accepting submissions for the upcoming 55th Annual Juried Art Show. The annual show at Durham Art Guild provides a juried competition of new works by artists from across the state, open to both members and non-members of the Guild. The Annual Juried Art Show, which runs Nov. 20–Jan. 22, 2010, is one of DAG's most popular exhibits of the year, drawing a large number of submissions and visitors from the region. Cash prizes awarded.

Eye of the Eagle Art, Clayton
The World's Largest Tiny Art Show will be held Nov. 1–Dec. 31 and will fill the galleries of Eye of the Eagle Art with artwork no larger than 6 inches by 6 inches. Each piece can be priced no more than $50 each (including gallery commission).

CreativeWilmington.com
"Art for the Masses" is a one-day event for local artists to sell their work directly to the public. In order to encourage buyers, all artwork will be priced $250 or less, with all proceeds going to the artists. An entry fee applies to cover artists' tables and marketing. "Art for the Masses" will take place Saturday, Nov. 21, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., location in Wilmington TBD.

BECA Foundation, New Orleans, La.
The BECA Foundation presents the second installment of CURATE THIS!—an exhibition opening in November 2009 and running through December. The works will be judged via an online jury of art enthusiasts from around the world, and the top ten favorite artists will be featured in the exhibition.

Penland School of Crafts, Penland, N.C.
The Penland Core Fellowship Program offers emerging artists the opportunity to explore artistic interests and career possibilities in a supportive artistic community. This program is a work/study fellowship that offers students an opportunity to participate in classes and be an integral part of the Penland community. Core students are employees of the school with compensation consisting of a modest stipend, room, board and tuition. Core students are chosen for one to two years, continuing on to a second year after a positive review at the end of the first.

Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, Providence, R.I.
The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts announces a call for artists interested in painting the official state portrait of Governor Donald L. Carcieri. The finished portrait must be completed and turned over to the State of R.I. by January 2011, at the conclusion of Governor Carcieri's final term in office.

Coker College, Hartsville, S.C.
Coker College's Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery is reviewing entries (all media) for solo shows in the 2010-2011 exhibition season. Coker College uses the Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery to broaden students' exposure to artists with regional, national and international reputations.

Alban Elved Dance Company, Winston-Salem
Alban Elved Dance Company is seeking visual and multimedia artists who would like to comment or reflect on the Holocaust of Nazi Germany and its relevance to today's world. For logistical reasons the company is primarily seeking applications by local artists (Winston-Salem area), but all interested artists are invited to apply.

North Carolina Seafood Festival, Morehead City
The North Carolina Seafood Festival seeks artists wishing to have their work considered for the official 2010 Festival Commemorative Poster. The first showing of the poster is in April 2010 at the annual unveiling ceremony. Posters go on sale at the conclusion of the unveiling and are collectors' items for many people. All entries must be submitted the week of October 12–26, 2009. 
Deadline: October 26 at 4 p.m.  No sketch will be accepted before October 12.

Las Vegas Arts Commission
The City of Las Vegas invites individual artists to submit written Statements of Qualifications to create a profound and lasting work of art in honor of America's service men and women. The Las Vegas Arts Commission and an evaluation committee will select a finalist who will work with theLas Vegas Veteran's Memorial in preparing a design. The design will need to integrate an expandable commemorative component, such as a brick walkway, commemorative wall or digital reader where donors can pay tribute to family members or others who proudly served in the armed forces.

Greensboro Library Arts Commission (mural)
The Greensboro Public Library is requesting proposals for a mural for the newly constructed McGirt-Horton Branch Library scheduled to open in 2010. Approximately $14,000 is available for this project. The budget will cover all expenses related to the project including materials, fabrication, installation, insurance, travel and equipment. North Carolina natives and artists connected to North Carolina who have experience and expertise with murals are eligible.
Deadline: Images must be received by October 30.

Greensboro Library Arts Commission (sculpture)
North Carolina natives and artists connected to North Carolina who have experience and expertise with sculpture are invited to submit proposals for a project at the McGirt-Horton Branch Library. Sculptures must be site specific, meet GLAC Mission Statement standards and address the focus of the branch. The series will consist of four sculptures and fit within approximate dimensions. Sculptures will sit on concrete bases topped with brick pavers. Approximately $9,500 is available for this project.

N.C. Historic Sites—Historic Stagville, Durham
Historic Stagville invites artists and craftspeople to exhibit and sell their work at the annual holiday event "Christmas in the Big House, Christmas in the Quarters" Dec. 5 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. There are no fees to participate. Artists supply their own tables and booth set-up materials.

Denali National Park, Alaska
The Artist-in-Residence program began at Denali National Park in 2001 and is currently seeking artists for residency in summer 2010. Artists are offered the opportunity to work amidst the natural splendors of the park while residing in the historic East Fork Cabin for 10-day periods throughout the summer months.

Lexington Art League, Lexington, Ky.
The human figure in art is timeless and universal and has reverberated throughout art history and contemporary art practice. Artists are invited to submit images of their work, in any medium, along with an artist statement for consideration by the selection committee for the 24th annual Nude exhibition. Nude 2010 will be on display January 16–March 28, 2010.

Filmmakers
Independent Television Service, San Francisco, Calif.
ITVS seeks producers of color to develop single documentary programs for public television. The Diversity Development Fund provides up to $15,000 for project research and development. Projects should speak to the ITVS mission to serve underserved audiences, explore complex issues, inspire dialogue and express points of view seldom seen on commercial or public television.

Full Frame Documentary Film Festival
The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is an annual international event dedicated to the theatrical exhibition of non-fiction cinema. Each spring Full Frame welcomes filmmakers and film lovers from around the world to historic downtown Durham, N.C., for a four-day, morning to midnight array of over 100 films as well as discussions, panels and southern hospitality. Films completed after January 1, 2008, are eligible for Full Frame 2010.
